Richard Cox - Bristol

RICHARD COX OF BRISTOL

Circa 1820

Height 85 inches

Antique mahogany longcase / grandfather clock  of elegant small proportions with eight day movement and very pretty painted dial.

The case, standing only 85 inches high excluding finials, is of elegant small proportions and typical of the area and period. The high quality mahogany case has a long trunk door, reeded canted corners to the hood, wavy edged cresting and three ball and spire finials on posts. The well-figured mahogany has mellowed to a very pleasing pale colour.

The movement is of eight day duration with the hours sounding on a single bell.

The time is displayed to the painted dial via the original blued steel hands. The very pretty dial contains a floral scene to the arch with painted and gilded designs to the four corners. There are subsidiary seconds and date dials and the dial centre carries the signature “Richd Cox – BRISTOL”.

This clock is illustrated in The Clockmakers of Bristol 1650 - 1900 - A J Moore
