JOHN WISE OF LONDON
Circa 1715
Height 91 inches
A Queen Anne period walnut longcase clock of eight day duration by this highly regarded maker
The well figured walnut case standing only 91 inches high and is a good example of an early arched dial case. The moulded trunk door has a lenticle and is herringbone strung around the edge. A similar treatment is also given on the sides.
The movement is of eight day duration with inside countwheel striking. The hours are sounded on a bell. The time is displayed via the original blued steel hands to the brass dial, with raised silvered chapter ring framed by well cast spandrels. The matted dial centre carries a subsidiary seconds dial and ringed date aperture and winding holes together with a small amount of decorative engraving. To the shallow arch framed by wheatear engraving is a single boss containing the signature -
"John Wise - London".
