Joseph Atkinson of Chesterfield was a rather enigmatic Derbyshire clockmaker working around 280 years ago
We have a very pleasing early 30hr brass dial grandfather clock in wonderful original condition
The oak and walnut case stands just 76 inches – a small size with elegant proportions – there is an original caddy top, a long shaped top door with original brass hinges
The 12 inch dial is noteworthy for its bold distinctive engraving – likely Josephs own hand – and the original blued steel hands are retained
The rather delightful and original 30 hour movement is rope driven and has kept time for almost three centuries
Quite remarkable and utterly charming.
