George Rice of Rudgly (Staffordshire)
Circa 1710
Height 84 inches
Status: For sale
A very elegant Queen Anne period 30 hour longcase / grandfather clock by an interesting early provincial maker
At 9 3/4 inches the brass dial is an unusual size. There is a raised silvered chapter ring with fleur-de-lys half hour markers that is signed Geo Rice - Rudgly
this is framed by well cast gilded spandrels depicting a crown and sceptre supported by two putti. The dial centre is matted and has an aperture showing the day of the month. There is a very pleasing 'c-scrolls and basket of flowers' engraved feature around this and the original single steel hand is retained.
The movement is of one day duration and typical of this early period - finely made with knopped and finned pillers - an outside countwheel controls the striking on a single bell.
The oak case is so elegant - very slim with a wonderful architectural hood; long moulded trunk door of quarter-sawn oak ; original butterfly hinges and exemplary condition.
This is an interesting early clock - over 300 years of domestic life and outstanding condition. It is a rare find and far removed from a 30hour cottage clock - amost certainly an important commission for the maker George RIce
Note: Rudgly is the early spelling for Rudgely in Staffordshire.
