William Preddy of Langport
Somerset England
circa 1810
Height : 86 inches
A Regency period antique longcase / grandfather clock by a leading and inventive Somerset clockmaker William Preddy of Langport
The case is veneered in fine mahogany veneers with mahogany and satinwood crossbanding. The hood columns are turned ebony with brass banding - a feature seen on other clocks and seem unique to this maker. There is satinwood and ebony detail to the base.
The movement is eight day duration - rack striking sounding the hours on a bell. The time is displayed via the original brass hands to the painted dial (the work of Walker & Hughes) The age of the moon is displayed in the arch and the date in a crescent aperture
Quoting A J Moore "In the seventeen years he was in business William Preddy seems to have sold more clocks than any of his competitors many with unusual automata in the dial" In my own experience I have encountered many of William's clocks and have noted also the high quality and a number of fine and unusual cases unique to this maker - this could of course mean many more of his clocks have survived than lesser examples of his competitors.
